Why should sustainability be a part of your professional development plan? 
Employees at Cornell are critical members of the community who identify best and better practice for the creation of a sustainable campus, and are also included in Cornell's Climate Action Plan (CAP) as a target audience for increasing engagement and climate literacy, or an understanding of climate change impacts. And skills for integrated sustainability solutions have been shown as key indicators of the success of senior leaders across industries, and senior leadership across American companies have identified 'sustainability literacy' as a core competency desired in employees at all levels.

Session 1: Sustainability & Climate Change 101

This session is appropriate for all staff to gain a basic understanding of sustainability and climate change issues as they relate to management and Cornell University.

Cornell recognizes the need for all managers to become better equipped to lead sustainable change within their units. In fact, 100% of Cornell staff members have sustainability in their job description. This session, part one of sustainability training, provides an introduction to climate change (including the cause, evidence, and impacts locally and worldwide) and sustainable behavior change. The urgency of climate change lays the foundation for Cornell to refine its operations and train managers to actively lead and co-create a culture of sustainability across campus. Participants will learn how Cornell is responding to this grand challenge, and managers will explore tools and strategies for enacting sustainable practices within your unit and everyday work. This session can be taken alone for users seeking basic sustainability knowledge, or paired with Sustainability 201 for complete training. 

 Learning objectives:

  1. Understand climate change, including its cause, evidence, and impacts
  2. Understand Cornell’s multi-level response to climate change and sustainability challenges
  3. Develop plans for integrating sustainability into their units
  4. Understand and use Community-Based Social Marketing to drive sustainable behavior change

Session 2: Sustainability Business Integration & Climate Solutions 201

This session is appropriate for staff who have taken Sustainability 101, a previous management academy class on sustainability, or who have worked on sustainability issues in a professional context for at least 3 years.

How is Cornell University changing business, purchasing, management, and planning systems to ensure long-term sustainability and carbon neutrality, and what is your role in stewarding this transformation? This session, part two of sustainability training, provides a deeper level of insight into climate change, the driving force behind sustainability, Cornell's carbon footprint and sustainability rankings, helping supervisors understand how to use these tools to pinpoint areas within their office or unit for systems sustainability integration and improvement. Users will be introduced to the Quadruple Bottom Line Sustainability Framework and tools for measuring and planning for deep sustainability transformation. This session can be taken alone for users with basic sustainability knowledge, or paired with Sustainability 101 for complete training. 

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand climate change, including its cause and impacts and how to share this message with others
  2. Understand Cornell’s vision and a manager’s role in sustainability
  3. Develop plans for integrating sustainability into their units
  4. Understand Cornell's climate action plan
  5. Understand and use Cornell's quadruple bottom line sustainability framework for decision making

Positions available on campus-wide leadership focus teams this Fall
The PSCC consists of approximately more than 150 members who serve on focus teams related to Buildings, Climate, Energy, Food, Land, People, Purchasing, Transportation, Waste, & Water. Network & collaborate across campus with faculty and staff, gain new connections and exchange ideas, and be a part of a high-level effort to achieve leadership goals for the campus using your expertise. The Cornell Green Office Certification Program is a point-based, self–assessment checklist which offices use to assess, their current practices, set goals to initiate new practices and be recognized for their efforts in the following areas: Community Engagement, Energy, Green Events, Purchasing, Recycling, Transportation, and Waste.

Green Lab 
In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, The Cornell Green Labs Certification Program aims to assist and educate lab users in Lab Energy Conservation, Green Chemistry, Solid Waste Management, Purchasing and Community Engagement
