Shoals Marine Laboratory

Shoals is Sustainable!

SML's Appledore Island campus is a model for sustainable living

Established in 1966, Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is a seasonal marine field station located on Appledore Island, Maine. The laboratory is cooperatively operated and maintained by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire (UNH). The Appledore Island campus is a self-sufficient, residential facility where participants and staff all live together in a close-knit learning community. SML's academic program runs from May through August to accommodate off-campus study for undergraduates.

The staff, faculty and students at SML along with partners from Cornell and UNH are constantly searching for ways to integrate sustainable practices into the Lab's academic program, the facility and island life. The Sustainable Engineering Internship program has provided engineering undergraduates with the opportunity to solve and implement sustainable problems and solutions since 2006. Shoals strives to be a model for sustainability on a larger scale; we invite you to learn more about all Shoals programs, AND to participate in making Appledore Island a totally green campus--read on!
